The science behind Semaglutide

When you eat, your gut is stimulated to release the hormone GLP-1. GLP-1 helps lower blood glucose (blood sugar) by prompting insulin release. Insulin then helps glucose enter your body’s cells for energy use later.
In some people, the gut doesn’t make enough GLP-1, or the brain is less sensitive to it.
Semaglutide is a synthetic GLP-1 RA (receptor agonist). An agonist activates the same cell receptors as your body’s own hormones. Semaglutide acts like the body's natural GLP-1—slowing digestion, curbing hunger, and signaling fullness to the brain.

What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist known to reduce appetite and support blood sugar regulation. To complement your needs, your treatment may also include Vitamin B12 to support energy, or L-Carnitine to assist fat metabolism and help preserve lean muscle mass.

Each formulation is personalized to align with your goals, physiology, and journey—providing more than weight-loss support. This is not one-size-fits-all—it’s your treatment, made for you.Your journey is personal. Your medication should be too.

How long do I need to take Semaglutide?

You don’t need to be on Semaglutide forever. We typically use it in phases to cut fat:

  • Induction (appetite control & titration): establish tolerance and dosing.
  • Active fat-loss phase: continue while you’re making steady progress.
  • Consolidation & taper: gradually step down and transition to maintenance.

After a successful cut, your clinician may pause Semaglutide and shift you to a maintenance plan or recommend a performance/recovery block (e.g., Sermorelin and training focus).

Over time, many patients do periodic cycles—short, clinician-guided “on” phases for fat loss, and “off” phases emphasizing recovery, lean-mass support, and sustainable habits. Your plan is individualized and adjusted based on progress, side effects, and goals.

Will I lose my muscle gains?

Our protocols are designed to preserve lean mass while you lose fat. Semaglutide reduces calorie intake; without a plan, some people can lose muscle along with fat. We recommend countering that with:

  • Resistance training: 2–4 days/week
  • Protein-forward nutrition
  • Gradual titration to avoid overly aggressive deficits
  • Recovery support (sleep and stress)
  • Our Sermorelin Performance Protocol

Many patients maintain their muscle during a cut when these steps are followed.

What are the side effects of semaglutide?

Most side effects are mild and transient as your body adapts. They often resolve spontaneously.

Side effects may include:

  • Nausea (most common)
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Abdominal pain/indigestion
  • Decreased appetite

How Maves manages this:

  • We start low and titrate your dose for comfort and results
  • You can message your clinician anytime for quick adjustments (no appointment needed)
  • If needed, our doctors can prescribe ondansetron (Zofran) for nausea

Most symptoms fade over time. If side effects persist, worsen, or concern you, reach out to a healthcare professional for guidance.

What's included with my plan?
Every Maves plan is personalized around you. After a full review of your health intake, a licensed medical provider will create a treatment plan tailored to your goals. If medication is appropriate, your provider will determine a dosing schedule and your treatment will be shipped directly to your door through a certified, state-licensed pharmacy. You’ll also have ongoing access to your care team for support throughout your program.
What weight loss treatment options are available to me?
Maves providers currently offer access to compounded GLP-1–based medications, including semaglutide and tirzepatide, when clinically appropriate. These treatments are considered for individuals with overweight, obesity, or weight-related health concerns as part of a medically supervised program.

All treatment decisions are made by a licensed medical provider following a review of your health history and goals. Your provider will determine whether compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide may be appropriate for you and will tailor your treatment plan accordingly.
What if I need to cancel?
You can cancel your Maves plan at any time through your online patient portal. There are no long-term contracts or cancellation fees. Please note that canceling your plan will not stop any orders that have already been processed or sent to the pharmacy. If an order is still pending, our support team can assist you.
How does a GLP-1 compare to other weight loss medications?
GLP-1 medications are often considered due to their non-stimulant approach to weight management. Unlike stimulant-based medications, GLP-1 therapies work by supporting appetite regulation and metabolic function. Suitability varies based on your individual health profile, and a licensed provider will help determine which options may be appropriate for you.
What is compounded medication?
Compounded medications are prepared by licensed pharmacies to meet individual patient needs when a personalized approach is appropriate. In a compounded setting, medications can be tailored in form and dosage based on a provider’s prescription and your treatment plan.

All compounded medications offered through Maves are prescribed by licensed medical providers and prepared by pharmacies that are licensed by state boards of pharmacy or operate as FDA-registered outsourcing facilities. These pharmacies follow strict quality, safety, and sterility standards.
Can my provider adjust my medication or dosage if I'm not seeing results?
Yes. Your licensed provider will monitor your progress and may adjust your treatment or dosage when clinically appropriate. Adjustments are based on your response to treatment, health history, and overall goals to ensure your plan continues to support your health safely.
What are the different GLP-1 options?
Maves offers access to multiple GLP-1–based treatment options depending on clinical suitability. Your provider will review your health information and recommend an option that aligns with your needs and goals.
Can I still qualify for treatment if I have existing health conditions?
Every patient is evaluated individually. Your licensed medical provider will review your full health history to determine whether treatment is appropriate and safe for you. Only a licensed healthcare professional can make this determination based on your medical profile.
Is a long term commitment necessary?
Maves programs are offered on a subscription basis that you can cancel at any time. While consistency is often important for achieving lasting results, your plan remains flexible and designed to fit your needs without long-term obligations.
